Sustainable development in Cannes
Meeting the environmental and energy challenge
For several years now, the municipality has been stepping up its efforts to ensure that Cannes has a positive, sustainable future: protecting the Mediterranean, decarbonizing transport, greening the city, reusing wastewater, recycling waste…
It actively encourages professionals to make environmental commitments, notably through the decarbonization of mobility charter for coach operators and the Cruise Charter signed by all cruise operators mooring in Cannes.
Cannes, Innovative and Sustainable Destination
In 2023, Cannes was awarded the “Destination Innovante Durable” label by France Congrès et Evénements, underlining its commitment to sustainable development and innovation. This label rewards the efforts of tourist destinations to reconcile economic growth, environmental preservation and social responsibility.
Quality & Sustainable tourism :
professionals' commitment to eco-responsibilityThis environmental approach is made all the more meaningful by the collective commitment of the City, the Palais des Festivals and all the players in the destination.
The City, the Palais and all the professionals involved
Hoteliers, restaurateurs, furnished-rental companies, shopkeepers, cabs, seaside resorts – all Cannes’ tourism professionals are fully mobilized in the image of the Welcome to Cannes Charter, which commits all signatories to respecting a set of virtuous and sustainable actions to promote a quality welcome.
The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès
The green pillar of sustainability
As the city’s economic engine, the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès has been actively contributing to this dynamic for several years. This is demonstrated by its ISO 20121 certification and its transformation into a société à mission, dedicating its raison d’être to “Welcoming the World Sustainably”.
An ever-greener Palais des Festivals
The Palais des Festivals, at the heart of today’s challenges in events and tourism, is implementing a number of sustainable initiatives, such as coolroofing, relamping, the use of thalassothermal energy and the adoption of 100% green electricity from local photovoltaic sources.
The Palais supports the Fondation Cannes
The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès finances and supports the Fondation Cannes and the Fonds de Dotation Cannes as a founding board member.
It supports a number of initiatives, including the PRIME project run by NaturDive and Blue Leaf Conservation, which aims to raise awareness, protect and restore Mediterranean seagrass beds.
Professionals recognized for their responsible approach
Aware of the impact of tourism on the environment, hotel professionals are adopting sustainable practices to satisfy an increasingly ecologically conscious clientele. Many establishments have been awarded labels such as Clé Verte, European Ecolabel or Green Globe certification, in recognition of their environmentally-friendly initiatives.
Travel agencies are also encouraging this trend by promoting the selection of committed establishments and service providers, reinforcing ecological awareness within the tourism industry.
